12. Anatomie en de endodontische opening

Samenvatting

Anatomische kennis van de verschillende gebitselementen is essentieel voor het adequaat uitvoeren van een endodontische behandeling. Een adequaat uitgevoerde endodontische opening is de voorbereiding voor het vinden van alle wortelkanalen en een goede toegang voor de instrumenten tot het kanaal. Indien geïnfecteerde wortelkanalen onbehandeld blijven, kan dit tot het persisteren van de infectie en de ontsteking leiden. Naast de anatomische kennis zijn diverse hulpmiddelen en technieken beschikbaar om de eerste stappen van een wortelkanaalbehandeling goed en voorspelbaar uit te voeren. Voor het overzicht van het gehele wortelkanaalstelsel is optimale verlichting en adequate vergroting belangrijk.

De term ‘apex’ duidt op de uiterste punt van een wortel (fig. 11.​3), maar wordt ook gebruikt voor de meest apicale millimeters van de wortel. Hier wordt de term in de laatstgenoemde betekenis gebruikt.
