Assistive technology is defined as the technology used by individuals with disabilities in order to perform functions that might otherwise prove to be difficult or impossible. At its simplest, assistive technology includes walkers and wheelchairs, which increase mobility, or reaching tools that allow objects to be picked up from the floor by an individual with limited agility. More complex assistive technology includes the use of micro switches, speech generating devices (SGDs), and even robots. As our technology has improved, it is now possible to provide individuals with profound disabilities more interventions that increase their level of safety, mobility, self-determination and quality of life. …
