Fragile Families: Foster Care, Immigration, and Citizenship is written by Naomi Rodriguez who shadowed a foster care organization in San Diego, California called Esperanza. The majority of children that Esperanza deals with are undocumented children of illegal immigrants in the United States. Rodriguez’s goal with this book was to point out places where the child welfare and immigration systems fall short in acting in the best interest of children. Chapter by chapter, she describes the entanglement of these two systems and how it affects the process of a child being removed, placed, and/or reunified with their biological family. Rodriguez successfully opens discussions about several issues in these systems that often go unnoticed. …
