In this issue of
Quality of Life Research, Poledniczek et al. describe the predictive value of health-related quality of life (HR-QL) measures on survival and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with transthyretin (TTR) amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) [
1]. HR-QL questionnaires are underutilized in the real-world clinical setting, and their added value over the New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class has been well-characterized. However, given proprietary fees, personnel to help administer, and patient survey fatigue, HR-QL surveys are often confined to the research realm. The authors here build on prior work demonstrating that changes in HR-QL have more prognostic value than changes in NYHA class, that HR-QL in ATTR-CM correlates with disease severity, and that patients with ATTR-CM have lower HR-QL than patients with non-ATTR cardiac disease [
2]. We applaud the authors’ carefully designed analysis here, which showcases the clinical relevance and prognostic utility of HR-QL in ATTR-CM. …
