Samenvatting

Traumatisch hoofd-/hersenletsel (THL) is een regelmatig voorkomende blessure bij verschillende sporten. Het vroegtijdig herkennen en vaststellen van traumatisch hersenletsel en het monitoren van symptomen op het veld is belangrijk. De biomechanica is sterk bepalend voor de ernst van THL bij sport. De achterliggende pathofysiologie die kan leiden tot ‘subconcussive impacts’ en eventuele langetermijngevolgen zijn een actueel onderwerp van wetenschappelijk onderzoek en publiek debat. Er zijn diverse risicofactoren die kunnen leiden tot langdurige klachten. In het veld vindt reeds de eerste behandeling plaats. De behandeling van specifieke klachten na sportletsel zoals autonome stoornissen, nekklachten en vestibulo-oculaire symptomen kent een eigen aanpak. De kennis over de langetermijngevolgen van recidiverend THL en het risico op neurodegeneratieve afwijkingen neemt toe. Nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van beeldvorming en serumbiomarkers bieden aanvullende mogelijkheden om hersenschade na THL bij sporters vast te stellen.
