Samenvatting

Er zijn twee manieren om naar de adolescentie te kijken: (1) als een moeilijke en chaotische periode en (2) als de leeftijdsfase waarin mensen worden wie ze eigenlijk zijn. De conclusie is dat de adolescentie een moeilijke én een vormende periode is. Beide perspectieven hebben geldigheid. Maar het perspectief van de adolescentie als vormende periode geldt voor de meeste adolescenten, terwijl dat van de moeilijke adolescentie geldt voor een minderheid. De middenadolescentie is dé periode van storm en stress. Ook zijn er acht ontwikkelingspatronen in de adolescentie. Dit zijn patronen die gevonden zijn in onderzoek in verschillende landen. Een aantal van deze patronen komt overeen met wat je zou verwachten: zo dragen ouders hun denken en doen over op hun kinderen. Maar er zijn ook onverwachte patronen, bijvoorbeeld dat problemen van adolescenten ervoor zorgen dat ouders minder in hen investeren. Daarnaast zijn er sterke indicaties dat er een beperkt aantal regels van individuele ontwikkeling is. Bijvoorbeeld dat individuele ontwikkeling een richting heeft en dat er duidelijke eindpunten van ontwikkeling zijn. Ten slotte betekent maturatie van adolescenten dat ze zich steeds zelfstandiger op gaan stellen en dat de invloed van bijvoorbeeld hun ouders beperkter wordt.
