Samenvatting

Cariës, chemische, mechanische en thermische prikkels kunnen leiden tot een bepaalde mate van pulpitis en parodontitis apicalis. Over het algemeen worden behandelingen vooral gericht op voorkómen en genezen van zowel parodontitis apicalis als pulpitis. Verwacht wordt dat ontstoken pulpaweefsel moeilijk of niet kan genezen en dat het succespercentage van een wortelkanaalbehandeling hoog is. Deze opvatting resulteert daarom vaak in grote of totale pulpaweefselamputaties bij pulpitis. De succespercentages van wortelkanaalbehandelingen zijn echter minder hoog dan gedacht. Het blijkt dat de aanwezigheid van gezond vitaal pulpaweefsel de beste bescherming is tegen parodontitis apicalis. De idee om pulpavitaliteit te behouden wint daarom aan terrein. In dit hoofdstuk wordt beschreven hoe men het herstellend vermogen van ontstoken pulpaweefsel kan inschatten en welke behandelingen er zijn om ontstoken pulpaweefsel te behandelen, behouden en doen genezen.
