In Trust and Skepticism: Children’s Selective Learning from Testimony, editors Elizabeth J. Robinson and Shiri Einav seek to provide empirical research, discussion of theory, and related commentary on the topic of children’s trust of testimony. As children receive information through statements of others, they are faced with the question of whether to trust the information. They must decide if the testimony—that is, the intentional verbal communication—is reliable. A child’s ability to discern the reliability of a statement is known as “selective trust” or “epistemic vigilance.” The scholarship presented in Trust and Skepticism seeks to gather key research in the growing corpus of knowledge regarding when and why children choose to trust testimony. …
